The challenge Irish SMEs face in getting found online

How easy is it for Irish businesses to get found online today? According to new research from team.blue’s State of European Business 2026 report, the answer is: it’s getting harder.

Based on responses from more than 10,000 businesses across Europe – including 630 businesses in Ireland – the research paints a picture of Irish SMEs facing increasing pressure to stay visible online while also preparing for the growing influence of AI on how customers discover products and services.

Irish businesses are feeling the pressure

One of the report’s most striking findings is that 37.7% of Irish businesses say reaching customers online has become harder over the past two years. That’s significantly higher than the European average of 30.6%, making Ireland the most challenged market surveyed in this area.

When asked about the biggest barriers to being discovered online, Irish businesses highlighted:

  1. Changing search and social media algorithms (43.2%)
  2. Rising advertising costs (40.3%)
  3. Creating enough quality content (31.2%)
  4. A lack of digital knowledge or expertise (30.1%)

The findings suggest that many Irish businesses don’t simply need more digital tools – they need practical guidance on how to use them effectively.

AI is coming – but many businesses aren’t ready

The survey also highlights a significant AI readiness gap.

While 72.2% of Irish businesses believe AI will change how customers discover businesses online, only 23.5% feel prepared for that change. Even more concerning, 40.4% say they are not prepared at all, creating a readiness gap of almost 49 percentage points.

For smaller businesses with fewer than 50 employees, the challenge is even greater. These organisations reported both the highest pressure in attracting customers online and the same significant gap between recognising AI’s impact and being ready for it.

As AI-powered search tools continue to evolve, businesses that invest in their digital presence today are likely to be better positioned for tomorrow’s customer journeys.

A strong website remains a competitive advantage

There is some encouraging news.

Ireland has the highest website ownership of any market surveyed, with 92.6% of businesses operating a website, well ahead of the European average.

However, the research suggests many businesses are not making the most of this valuable asset.

Only 10.8% accurately track how website visitors become customers, while confidence in being optimised for AI search remains low, averaging just 3.91 out of 10. In other words, the infrastructure is in place – but many businesses are still missing the insights needed to improve performance and measure return on investment.

Trust continues to matter

Irish businesses also stand out for the importance they place on trust and data protection.

The report found Ireland recorded the highest trust-in-provider score (82.9%) of any market surveyed, while GDPR compliance and European-based providers were also rated as particularly important when choosing digital partners.

This reflects a growing desire among Irish SMEs to work with providers that offer transparency, reliability and local expertise – not simply new technology.

Looking ahead

The digital landscape is changing rapidly. Search behaviour is evolving, AI is beginning to reshape online discovery, and businesses face increasing competition for customer attention.

The good news is that Irish businesses already have many of the building blocks in place. The next step is making better use of websites, improving measurement, creating high-quality content and preparing for an AI-driven future.
